The Top Five Movie Trailers of Super Bowl LI

The Super Bowl is the first real big national event of the year. It is the most watched thing on television in the history of television, and people spend a LOT of money on comedic, emotional, and political commercials for the game each year. Heck, we all know more people watch for the commercials than for the game itself. The Super Bowl also makes a great showcase for upcoming movie trailers, especially as the big high-budget movies are the only ones who can afford it. But which trailers were worth the money? Which ones got us the most hyped to go to the theater? Let’s go through them.

#5: Ghost in the Shell

In all my years of watching anime, I somehow completely missed watching Ghost in the Shell. Yes, I have been living under a rock. However, if I had to judge it by its live-action trailer, I would say Ghost in the Shell is a bit of Matrix with plenty of “what the heck is going on” mixed in. If nothing else, I’ll at least be renting it on Netflix when the DVD comes out.

#4: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales

Can you think of a movie with a longer title? I grew up during the Pirates of the Caribbean boom, so I had a bit of nostalgia when I watched this trailer – which is odd considering I didn’t like the last three Pirates of the Caribbean movies! Dead Men Tell No Tales has promised before to go back to its first-movie roots, and that shows through its new creepy dead villains. The trailer takes an oddly long amount of time before it shows Jack Sparrow, but he does eventually show up.

#3: Stranger Things 2

Technically this one shouldn’t count because it’s not a movie trailer. However, after it aired, all I heard about on social media was the new season of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Plus, it’s ripe with movie references – look at that Ghostbuster costume – so it earns itself a spot on the top five list. Everything I’ve see about Stranger Things drives me to want to watch it more, so clearly this trailer did its job. Luckily I have until Halloween to start binge-watching.

#2: Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We got more Baby Groot. What else is there to say? Oh yeah, also more “who the hell do you think we are” attitude and some rockin’ retro music. I think that’s enough. Marvel excels at making fun-to-watch superhero movies, so we’re in for a good time with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

#1: Logan

This trailer gets the top spot because it accomplished the impossible – it made me, a fan who doesn’t care about X-men and cares even LESS about Wolverine, want to go watch a Wolverine movie. With some western music and a little girl at Logan’s side, the Logan trailer brings on the same vibes that the video game The Last of Us gives, except with mutants instead of zombies. And don’t worry, Sir Patrick Stewart looks REALLY old in the trailer, but it’s all make-up. We should have him for many more years. First, let me go knock on wood.

Honorable Mention: The Nintendo Switch

Let’s give Nintendo a big shout-out for joining the Super Bowl party! While it’s for a video game console instead of a movie, it does the same job. We’ve got some good hype going for the new Nintendo Switch, and it looks like there’s plenty of games to get the hype. Just one more month until Breath of the Wild!
